A basketball stats app you can actually run alone

Standing up, one phone, one hand, while the game is happening. Twelve players on a single screen with no scrolling — because the alternative is no stats at all.

Most stat apps assume a second volunteer

Open a basketball stat tracker and you usually find a screen designed for someone sitting at a table with a laptop and nothing else to do. That person exists in college programmes. In a club on a Saturday morning, that person is you, and you are also coaching.

So the honest test of a stats app is not how many fields it offers. It is whether the sheet still gets filled in at the end of a bad second quarter.

Built for a thumb, not a mouse

Every decision on the live screen comes from standing on a sideline:

Gyms have no signal, and the app assumes it

This part was rebuilt after a real loss of data, and it is worth saying plainly. The game sheet keeps a copy on the device, so it reopens without a network. More importantly, it refuses to write an empty sheet over a full one, and it refuses to save at all before the sheet has finished loading.

A page that fails to load looks the same as an empty game. Treating those two states as identical is how a season's box score disappears — so the app now treats emptiness as never being newer than content.

Numbers you can defend to a parent

Season averages are only worth something if you know what they rest on. HoopSync never shows a percentage without the ratio behind it — "44/86 · 51%", not a bare 51% that could be one shot or twenty.

The same rule applies to the opponent. Their shooting percentages appear only for the games where the shots recorded add up exactly to the score conceded; everywhere else the app says how many games were set aside, and why. An indicator you cannot defend is worse than a blank.

Each game exports as a PDF box score, per quarter or complete, with the opponent line under your team totals.

Stats are one part of the season

The roster, the calendar, practice plans, the playbook and what players report about their condition sit in the same app — which is what lets a shooting slump sit next to three missed practices and a week of bad sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Can one person really keep stats during a game?

That is the constraint the screen was designed around, and it shaped everything: twelve players fit on one screen with no scrolling, the shot qualification never blocks you, and the clock is optional. If a stat app needs a second volunteer with a laptop, most teams simply will not have stats.

Which stats are tracked?

Points by type of shot, two and three point attempts and makes, free throws, offensive and defensive rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, fouls committed and drawn, minutes played and plus-minus. Team totals and an efficiency rating are computed from them.

Can I enter a box score after the game instead?

Yes. Not every game gets tracked live — sometimes you are coaching. You can type the sheet afterwards, or enter the final score alone and leave the individual lines empty. The season averages then say plainly how many games they rest on.

Does it work without a signal in the gym?

Yes, and this was fixed the hard way. The game sheet keeps a local copy on the device, and it refuses to save an empty sheet over a full one — a page that failed to load can no longer wipe a game. Gyms have bad reception; the app has to survive that.

Can I track the opponent as well?

Yes. There is an OPPONENT tile beside your own team for shots, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers and fouls. On the season view, shooting percentages for opponents are only published for the games where the recorded shots match the conceded score exactly — an approximate percentage is worse than none.

Do I get a printable sheet?

Each game exports as a PDF box score, per quarter or for the full game, with the opponent line underneath your team totals. Season averages per player are available separately.
